In September, 2010, all CUESD websites were moved to the BlueHost webserver in Utah. The CUESD no longer uses the SIRNET/Red Bluff High School webserver for hosting the CUESD websites. To estimate 2010 CUESD website usage, I used statistics from the SIRNET/Red Bluff High School web server from January 1, 2010 until September, 30, 2010 and other web servers we are now using.

Overall, in the 2010 calendar year, I estimate that 649,000 CUESD webpages were served, to over 290,000 visitors.

In the nine months from January 1, 2010 until September 30, 2010, our CUESD webserver on SIRNET had 114,877 unique visitors, 194,998 visits, serving up 447,474 webpages, with 1,544,006 hits, and serving up 73GB in files. Our monthly averages in 2010 have been 12,764 unique visitors, 21, 666 visits, serving up 49,719 webpages, with 171,556 hits, and serving up 8 MB in files each month. For the estimated annual CUESD/SIRNET website usage, for 2010, I figure 153,000 unique visitors, 260,000 visits, serving up 596,631 webpages, 2,059,000 hits, and serving up 97 GB per year.

Our EETT3-EAST Project website, in 2010, had 30,676 visits, 52,950 webpages served, 64,263 files served, and 130,963 hits.

Overall, in 2010, 649,000 CUESD webpages were served, to over 290,000 visitors.

Professional Blogging and Drupal Blogs for CUESD Employees

Professional blogging by teachers and selected staff of the Corning Union Elementary School District (CUESD) can be an excellent way of effectively communicating with students, parents, community members, and colleagues.

The terms weblogs and blogs are used interchangeably; as are blog and weblog. When you write something and publish it on your blog this is called posting to your blog. Blogs can include text, links, graphics, photographs, surverys, resources, and content produced with Microsoft Office software.

Most professional blogs are authored by individual teachers and other support professionals; although it is possible to configure a blog so that two or more teachers are joint authors of a blog, e.g., a Departmental blog.

Most CUESD bloggers use the Drupal content management system software for their school's website, e.g., Maywood, or creating a teacher's blog, and a few use Blogger, Typepad, or Word Press software. All use their web browser (Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox) to author their blogs.

CUESD bloggers must, of course, continue to observe all of our CUESD Internet Policies and Procedures.

The first CUESD teachers to author blogs were Steve Dillon, Peter Finkle, and Linda Lucero in 2007. The first CUESD administrator to blog was Dr. Beckie Bouchard in 2009. The first CUESD classified staff member to blog was Mike Garofalo in 2005.

Over the past few years, we have used some Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT) and Reading First grant funds to purchase instructional books about blogs and Drupal. These are kept at the Maywood Library in the Professional Collection, and can be loaned out to teachers and staff.

Here are some issues, reminders, and suggestions to consider when professional blogging:

1. Anyone with Internet access can read or look at what is posted to your blog including comments. Every time that you post to your blog it is automatically sent by RSS to the major search engines like Google. (Blogs can be configured to be non-public and comments disallowed.)

2. Your blog represents you as a professional, your school, your school district, and your community. You are responsible for the content on you blog because only you have the password access to post and edit posts on your blog.

3. The topics of your posts should generally be positive, upbeat, constructive, practical, useful, professional, businesslike, and on topic.

4. Blog authors need to respect copyright and academic rules and customs. They need to use citations when quoting, and give full credits to sources.

5. Stay on topic! Our CUESD Mission is "To give all students the opportunity to reach established academic goals at all grade levels, to encourage self esteem, to promote pride in their schools and community, and to instill an appreciation for lifelong learning." Typically, teachers post about classroom reading assignments, links to good web pages, information on upcoming events or trips, questions, information about upcoming classroom topics, test dates, special assignments, calendars, contact information, classroom projects, classroom or school fundraisers, sporting events, community service projects, school news, study tips, character education, creative classroom projects, kudos and attaboys, pep talks, character development stories, suggestions for good books to read, awards and achievements, parent education, and related professional activities.

6. You can post text, links, graphics, photographs, audio and video files to your blog. However, we must be careful about loading large pictures, audio (podcast) or video files on the Typepad server. If you have a large file, please talk with Mike Garofalo (3110) about options. Pictures size should be under 350 pixels in width.

7. Many active bloggers do their writing in a word processor such as Microsoft Word. They compose, edit, and spell check in their favorite word processor. When they are satisfied with the quality of their writing then the cut and paste the text into their blog composer while online. You can, of course, write directly into the blog composer and post. Pictures and graphics are inserted when in the blog composer. After you have posted to your blog, then READ what you have posted. Owners can edit previous posts. After you have decided on the Title of your post, never change the Title to that post or the Permanent Links will not work.

CUESD Websites Moved to New Webservers

This week, I will complete the movement of all previous HTML webpages and files in our five school and district websites to their new file locations on new webservers at BlueHost as part of preparation for the new Drupal websites. We are no longer using the Red Bluff High School (defunct SIRNET) webservers for these CUESD websites.

Maywood Drupal Website - Teacher Accounts

The new Maywood website is now operational. The new URL is: http://maywoodcuesd.org/

The new Maywood website uses the Drupal content management system. Drupal is a popular open source (free) content management system.

Our old Maywood website, using HTML code, is still fully operational and has been moved to a new web server. Both the old and the new Maywood websites are now being hosted by BlueHost in Utah, rather than Red Bluff High School (SIRNET). The new URL for the old Maywood website is: http://www.maywoodcuesd.org/old/index.htm.

Mike Garofalo, CUESD Webmaster, will be developing the new Maywood Drupal website during 2010-2011. He will train staff and teachers in the use of this new Drupal software. The first staff training in Drupal is scheduled for November 8th at Maywood; however, Mike is available to help anyone with one on one instruction in using Drupal.

TEACHER ACCOUNTS

Mike will set up a user Teacher Account and Teacher Homepage in Drupal for each teacher at Maywood. Each teacher will be assigned a Teacher Account. You will be given a name and password for your Teacher Account, and this information will be sent to you by email.

You will be able to edit your Teacher Homepage AND you are able to add new content to the website.

To do this:

1. Cut and paste the following URL into your web browser: http://maywoodcuesd.org/user
I would Bookmark this for future use. Go to the staff entry portal to our Drupal website.
2. Type in your Username and Password.
3. To add Content: In the very top left hand corner of the the webpage is a menu tab titled "Content Management", point your cursor to this menu tab. A submenu tab will open titled "Create Content." point your cursor on the submenu Tab, and then another side menu will open called "Teacher Pages." Click on the Teacher Pages summenu tab.
4. A new screen titled "Create Teacher Pages" will open.
5. Give the teacher page a descriptive title.
6. Use the editor to enter information. The Drupal editor is fairly roubust. You can enter text directly into the editor box. You can cut and past information into the editor box. You can create links to other webpages on the Internet. You can add graphics, images, or photographs into the editor. You can add documents created with Microsoft Office products or PDF files. You can attach files. It will take you a little time to get familiar with the editor options.
7. When you are finished, just click on the SAVE button on the bottom of Create Teacher Page.

You can always edit a previous post or your teacher homepage.
A link to the teacher page you just created is not found in the left sidebar.

A good way to practice is to add basic information to your Teacher Homepage via the editor such as classroom, grade, subject, address, email address, voice mail phone number, links to to favorite sites for students, your picture, etc.

You are responsible for the content you post on your Teacher Page. You must, of course, abide by all policies and rules of the CUESD for Internet Technology Usage.

The first Maywood teacher to post academic content to a Teacher Page was Martin Jimenez.

Many high quality Teacher Pages will be indexed at Academics at CUESD.

Back to School

All the Library Clerks and I returned to work after summer vacation. We have a half-day of training scheduled on 8/17 with the Alexandria software trainer, Gary Smith.

Frank Passantino, our technical support staff member, installed Alexandria on our in-house server. He mentioned to me the good support from the technical support staff at Alexandria that helped him resolve some problems.

We expect to be circulating books when students return on 9/19. We normally circulate over 80,000 books to our students each year.

Data Conversion from Follett Destiny to Alexandria

I reviewed and made choices regarding MARC records, fromatting and cataloging/classification categories as we moved data from Follett Destiny to Alexandria Library software.

I'm hoping my choices will not result in any data problems when using the new Alexandria software in August.

Highlights

The total annual circulation of books to students increased by 17% from 69,283 books loaned in 08/09 up to 81,020 books loaned to students in 09/10.

The total number of books available to students to borrow increased by 7% from 57,407 copies in 08/9 up to 61,530 copies in 09/10.

The total number of Accelerated Reader quizzes available for student use increased by 15% from 25,506 AR quizzes in 08/09 up to 29,256 AR quizzes in 09/10.

The CUESD makes 12,742 up-to-date textbooks, 579 titles, available to all of our students.

The number of library books per student increased from 30.5 to 32.73.

Our students, on the average, borrowed 43 library books during the school year.

The hours of staffing remained the same in 09/10 as in 08/09, and library services were added for Maywood students during lunch hours and during student breaks at Olive View and Woodson.

In June, 2010, we began moving from Follett Destiny Library and Textbook Management software to Alexandria Library and Textbook Management software. This is move will save the CUESD $19,000 in three years.

In June, 2010, we began moving to using the Drupal Content Management System open source software to create new websites for all the five schools and the District. The new Maywood website (http://www.maywoodcuesd.org/) will be completed by August 1, 2010.

Drupal Experimentation

Using our existing EETT-EAST web hosting account with Blue Host, we are going to develop new offerings of content using the open source product Drupal, Version 6.16. Drupal is a content management system (CMS).

Blue Host offers numerous open source Web 2.0 software including CMS software such as Drupal and Joomla.

My first project with Drupal, which I understand has a high learning curve, will be to develop an Academic Web Portal for the CUESD. As soon as I get the structure up and running, I will post the URL in this blog.

Moving to Alexandria From Follett Destiny

After a careful consideration of alternatives we have decided to move from the Follett Destiny library and textbook management software for our five rural elementary school libraries to the Alexandria library and texbook management software. The transition will begin on May 26th, 2010.

Prior to 2006, we used Follett Circulation Plus and Catalog Plus library management software running on our own server. That product, no longer supported by Follett, was outstanding and inexpensive. After 2006, using EdTech K-12 Grant funds, we moved to using Follett Destiny running on a server outside our district at a local high school (SIRNET) and were part of a consortium of school libraries using Follett Destiny at the Tehama County Department of Education (TCDE). Follett library and textbook management software is very powerful, web based, fast, full-featured, and a superior product with great support.

We had some serious questions in 2008-2009 about our share of consortium pricing for TCDE-Destiny and other SIRNET services. Unfortunately, we were unable to resolve the problems to our District's satisfaction in 2009-2010.

Moving to Alexandria allows us to again run the library and textbook management software on our own local server, cut costs by 62% over the past TCDE-Destiny consortium pricing, and maintain relatively full functionality. Many of the special features of Follett Destiny were little used by our teachers, students, or community members, so they will not be missed.

The interviews with existing Alexandria users that I spoke to indicate a high degree of satisfaction. Our library clerks were impressed with the speed and functionality of Alexandria. Alexandria sales staff and technical support staff have been excellent thus far.

We also moved from SIRNET email to Google Email Educational Applications in March, 2010. We are also considering moving from the featureless SIRNET web hosting of our flat .html websites to independent commercial web hosting primarily to take advantage of Web 2.0 open source software (e.g., Drupal, Moodle, Wikis, polls, image galleries, email lists, etc.), as well as for reducing costs. Our online searchable Accelerated Reader quiz database is hosted at Quiz List Interactive.

Changes, changes, changes ... Hopefully, the changes will work out for the best in the new school year.

Textbook Inventory Progress

Three years ago we added textbook inventory responsibilities to our Library and Media Services group. I developed procedures and policies for this process.

We have been using Follett Destiny Textbook Management software to manage textbook inventory and circulation of textbooks (only at Maywood Middle School). This software has worked well for us, although initial SIRNET annual consortium pricing for this Follett Destiny software module was rather high considering the simplicity of the software application.

We now have inventoried 12,426 textbooks, valued at $555,763.00, for the CUESD.

Accelerated Reader Quiz Information

Each of our five schools now have a fully functioning online database with information about Accelerated Reader (AR) quizzes on their school server. The online database is searchable by a variety of methods. Students, parents, teachers and staff can access this AR Quiz information at their homes.

This online database is hosted at Quiz List Interactive, and all Principals renewed the service in 2009. Our Tech Services expert sends new AR quizzes to Quiz List Interactive as soon as they are added to our school servers.

Personal Reflections

It has been four years since I, Mike Garofalo, made the first post to the CUESD InfoZone Blog.

I work part-time (three days each week) during the school year. My responsibilities include writing and managing grants for the Corning Union Elementary School District (CUESD), managing five school libraries, keeping an eye on educational software delivery and options, and serving as the webmaster for this district.

There is little time for blogging when you research new grants, write grants, and manage the budgets for grants we do receive. Nevertheless, I have managed to make 137 posts to this blog.

I do believe in using blogs to communicate and have been, with little success, trying to convince teachers and colleagues to begin and maintain professional blogs.

I maintain personal blogs and websites on subjects of personal interest to me through Green Way Research. These online resources have served up over 20 million webpages since 2000.

I just finished writing the technology plan for this school district. The plan includes objectives for improving student, parent, and community relations via blogging.

Some say that Web 2.0 is for younger people. I'm 64 years young and think the whole WWW scene is COOL beyond words.

Mrs. Sondra Hall, Library Clerk, Woodson School Library, retired after 25 years of service to the Corning Union Elementary School District. We all wish Sondra the best! She has promised to volunteer at Woodson School library in 2009-2010.

In August 2009, we welcomed Jackie Gill as the new Library Clerk at the Woodson School Library.

Mrs. Gill worked for a decade at the Maywood Middle School as an instructional aide, yard duty monitor, and PE girls room supervisor. She worked for two years as a health aide at the Woodson Elementary School. In August, 2009, she was selected to work as the Library Clerk at the Woodson School Library and Rancho Tehama Library. She works 30 hours per week, Monday - Friday.

Each teacher in the CUESD District has a webpage with basic contact information. All administrators and key support staff have a webpage. Each school has its own webpage, and the District Office has its own webpage. All school service components have their own webpage (e.g., food services, libraries, GATE, nursing, grants, counselors, DAIT, etc.). All web pages have a consistent format, color, and font.

We have worked consistently to expand and improve our school web pages, and add web based educational services for students (e.g., Study Island, Follett Destiny) and these improvements have resulted in increased usage over the past two years. Our CUESD web host, SIRNET, reported the following usage of all our web pages:

Olive View School Library

We have finally completed all work on the new Olive View Library. All the new shelving, 6 computers, furniture, artwork, equipment, and new books are now in place.

Mrs. Morales, Library Clerk at Olive View, now has all the tools to help our K-5 level students.

The new library has 11,700 books in a 1,900 square foot building. We serve 600 students. Our Follett Destiny Library Catalog is now online.

At the present time there are 13 professional blogs that have recently been started by teachers or staff of the Corning Union Elementary School District. Three teachers and one staff member have been posting to a professional blog for over two years.

We also have webpages for every teacher and school, and numerous web based services for students and parents, including our library catalog.

Maywood Middle School and Olive View Elementary School will be using Typepad for blogging in 2009-2010.

I am often asked "how do you find the time to go to all the blogs you are interested in reading." I use a feed reader, RSS Reader, or blog aggregator. Many of these are free, like the Google Reader, and others are commercial products. A few years back I purchased and now use the Windows desktop RSS reader called Feed Demon. I click a button in Feed Demon and it goes out and automatically and quickly collects posts from all the blogs on that topic that I am interested in, and have subscribed to the RSS feed, and assembles the posts or webpages in a convenient newspaper format, excluding any posts I have already marked as read. Many websites now have RSS Feeds so you can subscribe to updates to those websites.

To "subscribe" to a blog or webpage just click on the RSS feed button in a blog or webpage. When you click on the RSS feed icon it will automatically add it to your feed reader. Then you can get posts to that blog automatically into your chosen RSS Reader. The RSS feed button displays in the URL line, or in the blog itself, and looks like this:

One useful book I purchased a while back for my home office on this topic was "The Rational Guide to Google Blogger" by Wei-Meng Lee (Rational Press 2006). The blogging world, however, is changing rapidly so new features are introduced on a regular basis.

So you have a blog. Your going to take your students to the computer lab for some research work. You find four websites that have exactly what you want your students to use. You put links to these four websites in your blog. Your blog is, of course, linked on your school webpage. The students then can quickly go to your blog post, click on your links, and focus on curriculum work, not on surfing the Net ... Google-eyed. Of course, a colleague teaching the same curriculum could also use your blog post ... maybe you could collaborate and divide up the area, e.g., 6th grade ... one teacher posts about good Ancient China links, another Egypt, another Greece, etc. Here is a good example: simple, direct, efficient, focused.

We have two full featured computer labs at the Olive View School. We have 30 new computers in each lab.

We offer a full range of educational software for students and teachers to use at Olive View, as we do at all CUESD schools. Each CUESD teacher, of course, has their own computer in their classroom and is accessible by email for students and parents.

We are pleased to welcome Mrs. Christina Morales as the new Library Clerk at the Olive View Library.

Mrs. Christina Morales comes to our Olive View Elementary School Library with nearly four years experience in the Corning Unified Elementary School District as a Paraprofessional at Rancho Tehama Elementary School. She began her career as the Olive View Elementary Library Clerk in December 2008.

Christina entered the field of education after 25 years of military experience. She enjoys reading to students, and teaching them to enjoy the adventures they can have while reading books by their favorite authors. She looks forward to planting seeds of appreciation for literature. Christina’s favorite books are The Secret Garden and Gone With the Wind. Her favorite authors are John Grisham, Louis Lamor, and Mary Pope Osborne.

She enjoys visiting her grandchildren, playing her fiddle, reading, and sight-seeing. She is a member of the District 6 CSOTFA (California State Old Time Fiddle Association).

The former Library Clerk, Kimberly Onions, moved to a new job as a Library Technician at a middle school in Davis, California.

Our current Corning Union Elementary School District (CUESD) Technology Plan, 2005-2010, was approved by the CUESD Board of Trustees in March of 2005.

We will be revising and updating the CUESD five year technology plan for 2010-2015 in 2009. We will seek input from all stakeholders as we develop the new technology plan for 2010-2015. There have been and will continue to be major changes in computer hardware, software, services, networks and funding that will impact on our integration of computer technology with our curriculum, the introduction of new technologies, and professional development plans.

We removed all the books, shelving, computers and furniture from the Olive View School Library in June. The old library building will be demolished later this month and a new library built. If the project is not completed by August, we have backup plans for intermim library services to the Olive View students.

We circulated 61,145 books to students in 2007-2008, an average of 6,870 books every month. Each student, on the average, checked out 27.24 books in 2007-2008.

Surprisingly, this level of circulation is an increase of 1% over 2006-2007 circulation, despite the fact that the Maywood Library was closed for remodeling from August until November of 2007

Circulation increased by 39% at Olive View from 18,008 to 25,219.

Circulation increased by 49% at Woodson from 11,303 to 16,952.

Circulation increased by 19% from 5,642 to 6,731 at West Street.

We were pleased to learn this week that the Corning Union Elementary School District was funded for Year 3, 2008-2009, for the Enhancing Education Through Technology Grant. This Year 3 EETT grant is for $20,000. The grant will be used for technology and education projects with the 5th grade students at the Olive View and Woodson Schools.

This is the 3rd Year of funding for this EETT4 project for 5th grade students.

Congratulations to of 5th grade teachers: Virginia Bacigalupi, Dan Drum, Peter Finkle, and Linda Lucero. Dr. Beckie Bouchard is the administrator for this grant project. Dave Messmer is our technical support person for this project.

Atomic Learning - Software Training Online

We began using the Atomic Learning software this week. We have teachers and staff using 8 accounts for one year. Atomic Learning provides web-based tutorials of popular software such as Word, PowerPoint, Photoshop, FrontPage, Excel, Inspiration, etc.. The lessons are typically short lessons, with clear audio-video instructions for using some aspect of the software.

Maywood Library Computer Lab Opens

This week, we reopened the Maywood Middle School Library Computer Lab. We now have 35 new computers running Windows XP, Microsoft Office Professional Suite, Ainsworth Keyboarding, Study Island, Read Naturally, Rosetta Stone, Follett Detiny Web Express, United Streaming, and other programs. We have fast speed internet connectivity. The new lab will soon get a digital projector and screen.

The Maywood Middle School Library reopened earlier in the month of November.

Students Increase Computer Skills

Fifth grade students in Mr. Drum's class at the Olive View School and in Mrs. Lucero's class at the Woodson School reported increased skills in using computer software this past year. The students and teachers benefited from the Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT4) grant at these two schools. Students took an online survey about their computer skills and computer usage in September, 2006, and again in May, 2007. The students used Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Publisher to produce a variety of reports, and many of these reports were placed online.
The EETT4 project goals are available online, and our annual report for the EETT4 grant (9/15/07) is also online.

Follett Destiny, in English or Spanish versions, provides access by subject through Web Express to over 25,000 pre-selected educational and informative web sites for students, gives full information about the 49,000 books in our 5 school libraries, provides state curriculum standards linked to books and websites, includes specialized resources for teachers, and provides an optional graphical interface for younger students. Anyone can use these Internet resources in their home. Web Express is of great value to parents who want their children to do safe and beneficial reading and research on the Internet. The information about books we offer is very detailed, with Accelerated Reader quiz information for most books, and links to appropriate websites related to the books are included.

Study Island is a web based program that provides selected students with a educational quiz and educational game playing environment customized for their specific grade level assignments and curriculum needs. Each student is give a name and password to access their personal account. Study Island can be used at school, at home, at the local County library, or anywhere you are connected to the Internet. Last year, our middle school students answered 560,000 questions in quizzes or educational games in Study Island. We also offer our students access to such educational software programs as Accelerated Reader, Rosetta Stone, Accelerated Math, United Streaming, and Read Naturally.

With access to the latest approved textbooks, quality reading materials from our school libraries, and a wide array of new Internet Web based tools our students can continue learning and expanding their minds at home as well as at school.

Podcasting

Podcasting is a new term used to describe sharing audio files over the Internet and playing them on your IPod.

You can record the audio on your computer with a microphone. The common file formats are MP3, AAC, WAV, WMA.

I own and use a portable digital recorder: Olympus WS-100. I'll bring it to the workshop on 8/1.

After you record your file, you upload it to a webserver.

For example, here is one audio recording I made today.

Since I put the audio recording on the Internet, it is a "podcast." You could, not that you would, download to your IPod or MP3 player and listen.

You can get a free blog at Blogger.com and from numerous other sources. You can host your own blog using Word Press on your own server. Blogs can be set up so that more that one person can be authorized to post (put a document, file, audio, video, links, picture, etc.) to the blog. Many people write in Word and then cut and paste their work into their blog, although you can input information directly into your blog. Most blogs are live on the Internet for all to read, although you can restrict readers to a select group.

When you post to a blog it goes out on the Internet by an RSS feed. Google picks up your post and you can search blogs in a variety of search engines including Google, Technorati, and Blogger. Note: Some K-12 schools do not allow you to access blogs.

Your posts are ordered by the date of post, with the most recent on top. You can Tag a blog post for internal organization. You can edit and delete previous posts. Blogs are part of push/pull technology of Web 2.0.

We will sign up for a blog with Blogger.com and use it in our workshop.

Sign up for a new blog. Give your email and a password.
Give your blog a name (you can change name later).
Decide on style of blog you want.
Write down the URL of your new blog, email, and password.
Remember: Copy (Ctrl+C) and PASTE (Ctrl+V), copy and paste, copy and paste.

You can get a free account with this software. You can upload your photographs into your Flickr account. The photos can be named and tagged. You can look at them individually, by groups, and in a slide show. You can put photos in your Flickr account via your cell phone. You can link to individual photos with a URL, e.g.,
http://www.flickr.com/photos/karenmikephotos/301890480/ Your Flickr photos can be included in your blog. For $39 a year you can get even more features.

Flickr photos are accessible under the Creative Commons license. You can search millions of photos by subject (Tags) and subscribe to Tag groups.

First, go to Flickr and sign up. You need an email mail account you can readily access with a web browser. I recommend you get both a Yahoo account and a Yahoo email account, and a Google Account and a Google email account. These accounts will come in very handy to you. Do not use your school email account. Remember to write your password down in a confidental/personal place.

Use Microsoft Word to do all your work. Use wide margins on the left, right, top and bottom. Keep your graphics (i.e., pictures, art, charts, illustrations) to the left or in tables. Use all the fancy features of Word you would like to use. Stay to the left!!

Use Word to make hyperlinks to documents on the Net.
I have some instructions on-line for making hyperlinks with word.

Save your work in Word.doc format.

Convert your saved Word.doc into a PDF file using Adobe Acrobat or Cute PDF Open Source Converter.

Put the new PDF file on the web server. Check to make sure the URL for the file does work. Done!

Photo Story is a free Microsoft product. To get it you go to:

Follow the instructions and download to your computer’s hard drive.

To use:

Save all the pictures you want to use in one folder on your hard drive, server space, Flickr space, USB flash drive, or CD. For today’s lesson I used pictures from Flickr on “Kids and Computers” as well as some photos from EETT3-EAST.

Open Photo Story. Click on “Begin a New Story.” Next.

Click on Import Pictures. For today, browse to the CD I gave you, Web2Training, PhotoStoryPracticeFolder. Highlight all the picture (.jpg or .gif) files (i.e. Shift + Ctrl + End). Click OK.

Now you can organize the pictures in the order you want them. Right click on a picture to select Delete. Next.

Add a title to the first slide. Next.
Add your narration if you’d like to do so. You’ll need a microphone plugged into the computer. Next.
Select some music (MP3 or WMA). There are a few songs on the CD I gave you that you can use. Adjust volume of background music. Next.
Save your work. Give it a name. Next.

View your story. Here is what my “Kids and Computers” Photo Story sounds like:

Library Closures in CUESD

All school libraries in the Corning Union Elementary School District (CUESD) will be closed for circulation services from Monday, March 26th until Thursday, April 12th , 2007. Books will not be checked out or in during this period from 3/26 – 4/12. All CUESD school libraries will reopen for circulation services to students on Friday, April 13, 2007.

Our school district recently obtained Education Technology K12 grant funding to implement the Destiny Library and Textbook Management software from the Follett Corporation. We have joined with many other schools in Tehama County to implement the Follett Destiny software. The Tehama County Department of Education, SIRNET, will start loading the software and transferring databases for the CUESD and other schools on March 26th, 2007. CUESD staff will be trained on April 10th, 11th, and 12th.

The Follett Library and Textbook Management software will provide many new features for our emerging Web 2.0 work environment. The union library catalog for all our schools will be online on the Internet. We can customize the look of the web based catalogs for all our schools. Follett Destiny includes over 20,000 preselected Internet links to websites with relevant resources for K-8 students. The library circulation, cataloging, customer, reserve, reporting, and inventory control features will be more robust. Accelerated Reader quiz information will be included. We will be doing a pilot program in August, 2007, using the new textbook management software. There are numerous features of particular interest to teachers. District and school websites will be more integrated with library, media, and information resources. We will learn more about all of the new features, and how to use them, in April, 2007.

We apologize to students and teachers for the temporary inconvenience as we move forward to provide more access to information and services to parents, students, teachers, staff and the general public via the World Wide Web. Thank you for your patience.

Writers and the Web

I will be giving two presentations at the upcoming Tehama County Department of Education Literary Festival in Red Bluff. the LitFest will be at the Red Bluff Community Center on March 16, 2007.

My talk will be called "See You on the Web." It will give ideas to 6th to 12th grade students to help them see how the Internet might help them as writers. I will be giving the presentation in the computer lab.

I worked with Erin Pritchett at the West Street School to help her get started with using Microsoft FrontPage 2003. Erin will be the Assistant Webmaster at the West Street School. 5th Grade Students Using Technology

5th grade teachers at our Olive View Elementary School (Dan Drum and Virginia Bacigalupi) and Woodson Elementary School (Linda Lucero and Peter Finkle) have been using new hardware and software with their 5th grade students in creative ways. We have purchased two 16 unit laptop computer labs for 5th grade students to use, added a new 20 unit desktop lab at Olive View School, added digital presentation hardware for four teachers, and provided two laptop computers for the 5th grade teachers to use at home.

The Enhancing Education Through Technology Grant, Round 4, (EETT4), enabled these teachers to get trained in project based learning strategies, how to use new hardware and software, and how to share their experiences and projects with other 5th grade teachers at their school.

Our mid-year report for the EETT4 project is available for others to read.

Work on project based and technology rich lessons are online for others to use.

We have a EETT4 project website.

We are ready to put some student work online to share with others.

Corning Schools Use New Technologies

The Corning Union Elementary School District (K-8) continues in its search for advanced technology tools to help its 2,000 students. Its school website provides Internet access to all our schools, to all our teachers, to all our programs and services, and to selected educational resources available online to our students. Eight new large computer labs running the latest software are available to students at the Maywood, Olive View, Woodson and West Street Schools. All our teachers have new computers and are accessible to parents by email and telephone. All computers are connected to the Internet on T1 high speed lines. The Maywood School has the EAST technology lab with 25 very powerful computers and superb, high end professional software (e.g., GPS software, Casablanca Video Editing, SoftImage, Sketchup, Photoshop, etc.) for all our science students to use.

The Corning Elementary School District has been a leader in obtaining competitive grants for adding new technology for student use: the Enhancing Education Through Technology grants for Round 1, Round 3, and Round 4 ($357,000); the Reading First Grant, Migrant Education grant, and the GearUp grant. It also qualified for the Ed Tech K-12 Grant, and EETT Formula Grant by having developed a detailed 5 Year CUESD District Technology Plan (2005-2010).

Our 7^th and 8^th students have taken online technology surveys about their computer skills and usage. Over 56% have computers connected to the Internet in their homes; 62% say they are proficient in their use of a word processor; 70% use email; and 25% use a computer once a week or more to write school reports.

All our 3rd-8th grade students at all schools use the online Accelerated Reader testing, and all students can access quiz information on the Internet at home. Three schools use the web based Study Island software, and 5^th-8^th grade students can use this software at home, which provides questions, answers and feedback to students on subjects in the State approved standardized curriculum. We also use Rosetta Stone software and Read Naturally computer based instructional software at 4 schools with our students. Our teachers use United Streaming to bring instructional video, linked to standards, to our students to supplement instruction. We will be adding a full-featured and web based online information service, Follett Destiny software, in the Summer of 2007.

Maywood Technology Grant Award

We received notice today that the Enhancing Education Through Technology Grant, Round 3, for our Maywood School was extended. We were awarded $30,400 to continue the grant from 7/07 until 6/08. This EETT3 grant has made it possible for us to implement the EAST Project with our 7th and 8th grade science students. Our science teachers, Janice Farmer and Steve Dillon, have been the leaders in this project along with many hardworking 7th and 8th grade students. The community outreach efforts by this group has been outstanding.

Study Island Expands at Maywood

Many 7th and 8th grade students at Maywood Middle School use the Study Island Software for learning and drill in a variety of subject areas areas based on the California State Standards. Students can also use this software at home. These students have answered over 85,000 questions since the start of the school year. The GEARUP project funded the purchase of this software.

Starting in January, 2007, we will be expanding this access to all sixth grade students at the Maywood School. Maywood School Site funds will be used to provide access to our 6th grade students.

Students can use Study Island at their homes on the Web.

We just sent in our application for the Middle and High School Supplemental Counseling Grant for the Maywood Middle School. It will provide part of the salary for an academic counselor.

We completed all work on the EdTech K-12 Voucher Program grant.

We are preparing to write grant reports for the Enhancing Education Through Technology grants, Round 3 (EAST-EETT) and Round 4 (Olive View and Woodson).

Destiny Software Eligible for EdTech Funding

The Settlement Claims Administrator from the California EdTech K-12 Voucher Program sent me an email stating that the "Destiny Library Management System Software by Follett: Eligible, submit on General Purpose Voucher." Our plan in the CUESD is to use part of our EdTech K-12 allocation of $107,000 to purchase the Destiny Software in cooperation with the Tehama County Department of Education. Good News!!

Hardbacks and Hard Drives

"Children (ages 10 -16) apparently know more about the Internet than about books, a survey suggests:

Six out of 10 youngsters questioned knew that "homepage" was the front page of a website; but only 9% could explain what the "preface" to a book was.

More than a third knew that "hardback" was a type of book, but 57% identified "hard drive" as part of a computer.

The initials "www" meant World Wide Web to 70%, but less than a quarter of the sample knew that RSVP was asking them to reply to an invitation.

Children said they were regularly using the internet to help with their school work. Sixty-nine per cent said the web made homework easier, 67% quicker and 66% more fun because of the combination of sounds and pictures. "

Early Intervention for School Success - Professional Learning Community

A grant application for $50,000 for two years (2006-2008) was submitted on October 2, 2006. The Grant writing review team included: Patti Thurman, Mike Garofalo, Jim Stevenson, Steve Kelish, Debi Stone, Lorna Husome, and Stephanie Smith. The grant application was supported by the State Preschool program in Corning and reviewed by Paula Brown-Almond. Letters of support came from Robert Douglas, Superintendent TCDE; and, Alfred Celador, Migrant ducation. The CUESD School Board approved the grant application on 9/28/06. Mike Garofalo edited and completed the grant application. Wes Grossman approved the budget prepared by Mike Garofalo.

The EISS grant coordinator will be Patti Thurman. We were notified on 11/6/06 that CUESD was awarded a EISS grant.

7th and 8th grade students at Maywood School were given a one period orientation to creating webpages by Mike Garofalo. An outline of the presentation is located online at the EAST-EETT3 website.

We hope to offer a number of tutorials at the EAST-EETT3 website.
